Why should Elementary students learn a second language?

second language

It is never too early to start learning a new language. Learning a new language provides many benefits no matter how old you are. A child’s brain is like a sponge, absorbing information easily. Besides, they have more free time, fewer inhibitions, and a curious mind. Their brains are active when they are young; they can put new words together and form sentences. Kids, when learning something new, tend to focus better. This trait also helps them to multitask and opens up their imagination. As a result, we are allowing them to benefit those around them.

Getting your child to learn a language can help them succeed in life. Multilingual children can communicate with others on a deeper level. It provides many long-term cognitive and social benefits. It allows them to connect with people from various backgrounds. Besides gaining confidence, the child can now stand and converse with others. They can view someone else’s perspective to understand the meaning. Children in bilingual environments show more empathy towards others. They are also more receptive to other cultures and experiences.

Elementary children must have access to at least one additional language. It motivates students to be proactive and paves the way for a healthy future. Moreover, they better understand languages with which they are familiar. Learning a second language may appear unusual at first, but it can be beneficial in the long run. It can strengthen their CVs and help them with college admissions. Today, many schools and institutions have already started to include it in their curricula.

Here are some reasons why Elementary students should learn a second language. Also, how you can help, whether you speak another language or not.

1. Elementary kids are way smarter than the older ones:

Young kids have a natural way of learning a new language. They learn through sounds, words, and sentences. Despite knowing at their own pace, they enjoy the learning process. They may look small, but the capacity to absorb information is massive. By the time they are six to seven years of age, the average child knows more than ten thousand words. Research says that a child’s brain development is between 6 years to puberty. So, it means that the learning is at the maximum in children under 10 years of age.

Early language learning contributes significantly to overall brain development. They score higher on reading, verbal fluency, and general intelligence. According to research, children who are bilingual excel in a range of subjects. They even outperform monolingual children in many ways. Bilingual Kids become native speakers of more than a language without getting confused. This is because their brains have to handle multiple languages. They are therefore more creative and flexible. Additionally, they develop better literacy skills. Also, children who acquire a second language at a young age have a better chance of sounding like a native speaker.

2. Elementary kids learn a language easily:

Young children are naturally curious, which makes them receptive to taking information. They like to learn something through exploration and play. Learning a new language is much easier for young children than older ones. This is because the brain’s language center is still developing. So, when the brain develops, it strengthens the neural pathways that we use on a regular basis. Their brain tends to make neural connections at a rapid pace. As a result, the brain becomes more efficient, preparing them to perform.

Because children have fewer inhibitions, language learning is fun and natural. Young kids aren’t afraid of making mistakes and sound silly. In addition, they are under less pressure to perform than adults. As a result, they have more time on their hands to learn new things. The majority of adults are either too busy or anxious to devote adequate time to study. Children who do not know a second language as a child are unlikely to do so later in life. When a child begins learning a language at a young age, they will become proficient in the language as they grow older.

3. We live in a multilingual and multicultural society:

Having a second language can drastically change your life. Living in an interconnected world, kids can connect better with other languages and cultures. Knowing someone’s native language shows a profound respect for that culture. When kids struggle with something, they try to develop better solutions. They can communicate and resolve issues rather than let them die down on their own.

We are constantly making relations with other countries for travel and career. Furthermore, the world we live in is becoming multilingual. Interactions with one culture can lead to interactions with different cultures. This allows us to appreciate the richness of the language as well. Learning another language can broaden your horizons in a dramatic way. It is beneficial for everyone, regardless of what they do.
